Bio
John Brooks is a dedicated public servant, former New York State Senator, veteran, longtime volunteer firefighter, and lifelong Long Islander who has spent decades serving his community. With a background in public service, education, emergency response, and local government, John understands the challenges facing Long Island families because he has spent his life working alongside them.
During his time in the State Senate, John fought for property tax relief, strong public schools, veterans, first responders, and working families. Now, he is running for Assembly to continue that work and bring experienced, community-focused leadership back to Albany.
John Brooks believes Long Island deserves real results: lower costs, safer communities, stronger infrastructure, and a government that listens to the people it serves.
Democratic Candidate for New York State Assembly, District 14
John Brooks has spent his life serving Long Island, as a volunteer firefighter, a school board member, a small business risk management expert, a State Senator, and now as a candidate to represent Assembly District 14, covering Bellmore, North Bellmore, Wantagh, Merrick, and portions of Levittown and Oceanside.
John doesn't do politics the way politicians do politics. He does it the way a neighbor does, by showing up, doing the work, and leaving the partisan noise at the door.
A Lifetime on Long Island
Born and raised in Nassau County, John has called Seaford home for his entire life. He's spent more than 53 years as a volunteer firefighter, serving two terms as Chief of the Seaford Fire Department. Before entering public office, he spent seven years on the Seaford Board of Education, including two as Vice President, and built a career in insurance and risk management, including as Executive Director of Risk Management for Nassau County and in senior roles at GEICO. He also served his country in the New York Army National Guard.
That background, firefighter, school board member, risk manager, veteran, is the foundation of how John governs: practical, hands-on, and focused on results over rhetoric.
A Record of Getting Things Done
John represented the South Shore in the New York State Senate from 2017 to 2023, where he built a reputation as one of the most productive members in Albany, passing more than 150 bills, with 62 signed into law. Senate Republican Minority Leader Rob Ortt has personally praised John for running his committee work in a nonpartisan way, and John has been willing to break with his own party's leadership when Albany's one-size-fits-all approach didn't reflect what Long Island actually needs.
